A hybrid mattress combines a pocket sprung base with one or more foam or gel comfort layers on top. The result is a mattress that delivers the best characteristics of both spring and foam construction.
Who is a hybrid mattress best suited for?
Hybrid mattresses work well for a wide range of sleepers, which is part of why they've become so popular. They're particularly good for combination sleepers who change position during the night, couples with different firmness preferences, and anyone who likes the feel of memory foam but finds a pure foam mattress too warm or unsupportive around the edges. If you're upgrading from a traditional spring mattress and want added comfort without losing support, a hybrid is an excellent choice.
Are hybrid mattresses good for back pain?
Many people with back pain find hybrid mattresses very effective. The pocket spring base provides consistent spinal support across the full sleep surface, while the foam comfort layers cushion pressure points at the hips, shoulders and lower back. A medium or medium-firm hybrid is generally the recommended starting point for back pain sufferers, as it offers the balance of support and pressure relief that most people need. How does a hybrid mattress compare to a pure memory foam mattress?

Are hybrid mattresses suitable for adjustable beds?
Standard hybrid mattresses are not suitable for adjustable beds — the pocket spring unit is rigid and cannot flex around the articulating sections of an adjustable base. If you have or are purchasing an adjustable bed frame, you'll need a mattress specifically designed for it, typically a flexible foam or specialist hybrid built with a coil system that can bend. What spring count should I look for in a hybrid mattress?
In a hybrid mattress, a spring count of 1,000 or more (based on a king size) is considered a solid starting point for good support. Higher counts — 1,500 to 3,000 — provide more refined, targeted support and better motion isolation between partners. That said, spring count is only one factor. The quality and gauge of the springs, the depth and density of the foam layers, and the overall build quality all contribute more to how the mattress performs than the spring count alone.
Is a hybrid mattress good for couples?
Hybrid mattresses are an excellent choice for couples, for two reasons. How thick should a hybrid mattress be?
Most hybrid mattresses are between 25 and 35 cm deep. The minimum spring unit in a quality pocket sprung base takes up around 15–18 cm, which leaves 8–17 cm for the comfort foam layers above. A deeper foam layer generally means more pressure relief but also more warmth. A mattress in the 26–30 cm range strikes a good balance for most sleepers. Bear in mind that a very deep mattress may require deep-pocket fitted sheets — worth checking if you already have bedding you want to keep using.
