What is a pocket spring mattress?
A pocket spring mattress contains hundreds — sometimes thousands — of individual coil springs, each sewn into its own separate fabric pocket. Because each spring is independent, it can compress and respond to pressure on its own without affecting the springs around it. This gives pocket sprung mattresses their defining characteristic: targeted, body-adaptive support that contours to your shape while minimising motion transfer to your partner.
What's the difference between pocket springs and open coil springs?
Open coil (or continuous coil) springs are all connected to each other via a single wire running through the mattress. When one spring compresses, it affects those around it — meaning movement on one side of the bed is easily felt on the other. Pocket springs are completely separate from each other, so they react only to the weight directly above them. This makes pocket sprung mattresses far better at isolating movement, providing more precise body support, and lasting longer — though they do come at a higher price than open coil alternatives.
How many pocket springs do I need?
Spring count (given per king size mattress as standard) is a guide rather than a definitive quality indicator. A count of 1,000 provides a solid foundation for most sleepers. From 1,500 upwards you get noticeably more refined, zoned support and improved motion isolation. Counts above 2,000 can deliver a premium feel but diminishing returns set in — the quality of the spring wire, the fillings on top, and the overall build are just as important. A well-made 1,000 spring mattress from a reputable brand will often outperform a cheaper 3,000 spring mattress.
Are pocket spring mattresses good for couples?
Pocket spring mattresses are one of the best choices for couples specifically because of their motion isolation. Each spring reacts independently, so when your partner turns over or gets out of bed, you're far less likely to feel it. The higher the spring count, the better the isolation. How do I choose the right firmness in a pocket spring mattress?
Firmness is determined by your sleep position and body weight. Do pocket spring mattresses need to be turned?
Most modern pocket spring mattresses are single-sided and non-turn — they have a defined sleeping surface on top and a base layer underneath, and should not be flipped. However, they should be rotated 180 degrees (head to toe) every 3 months for the first year and every 6 months thereafter. This ensures the springs and fillings wear evenly and prolongs the life of the mattress. Always check the manufacturer's label — some premium mattresses are double-sided and designed to be flipped.
What base do I need for a pocket spring mattress?
Pocket spring mattresses work with most bed bases. A divan with a solid platform top provides the firmest, most even support and is generally the preferred base for a quality pocket sprung mattress. Slatted frames work well too, provided the slats are no more than 7 cm apart — wider gaps can allow the springs to push through and cause premature wear. Avoid placing a pocket spring mattress on an adjustable bed base unless the mattress is specifically designed for it.
How long does a pocket spring mattress last?
A quality pocket spring mattress should last between 8 and 12 years with proper care. The spring unit itself is highly durable; it's usually the natural or synthetic fillings above it that soften first. Regular rotation, a good mattress protector, and using it on a suitable base will all help extend its lifespan. Signs that a pocket spring mattress needs replacing include visible body impressions deeper than 2–3 cm, squeaking or noisy springs, or consistently waking up with aches and stiffness.
Are pocket spring mattresses suitable for heavier sleepers?
Pocket spring mattresses can be excellent for heavier sleepers, but it's important to choose the right specification. Heavier sleepers compress the springs more deeply, so a higher spring count and a firmer tension are usually recommended. Look for mattresses described as suitable for heavier persons, or those with a reinforced edge and a higher-gauge (thicker) spring wire. A firmer pocket spring mattress will provide better spinal support and is less likely to develop deep body impressions prematurely.
Can I use a pocket spring mattress on a memory foam topper?
Yes — a memory foam or wool topper placed on top of a pocket spring mattress is a very popular combination. A topper is a cost-effective way to add softness or pressure relief to a mattress that's slightly too firm, and the pocket springs underneath still provide the support and motion isolation they're known for. Bear in mind that a topper will add to the overall depth of the sleeping surface, so you may need deep-pocket fitted sheets. If your mattress already has a thick comfort layer, adding a topper may make the overall feel too soft.
