A topper is a cost-effective way to add softness or pressure relief to a mattress that's slightly too firm, and the pocket springs underneath still provide the support and motion isolation they're known for. Bear in mind that a topper will add to the overall depth of the sleeping surface, so you may need deep-pocket fitted sheets. If your mattress already has a thick comfort layer, adding a topper may make the overall feel too soft.
