Memory Foam Mattress FAQs
What is memory foam and how does it work?
Memory foam — originally developed by NASA — is a viscoelastic material that responds to both heat and pressure. When you lie on it, the foam gradually softens and moulds to the contours of your body, distributing your weight evenly across its surface. When you move or get up, it slowly returns to its original shape. This contouring effect reduces pressure on key points like the hips, shoulders and lower back, making memory foam especially effective for pressure relief and comfort.
Is memory foam good for back pain?
Memory foam can be very effective for back pain, particularly for side sleepers and those suffering from pressure-point discomfort around the hips and shoulders. Its ability to contour to the spine's natural curve helps maintain alignment during the night. However, if you need very firm spinal support — for example, if you've been advised to sleep on a firm surface — a medium-firm pocket spring or hybrid mattress may serve you better. The cause and nature of back pain varies considerably, so it's worth trying our mattress quiz to get a personalised recommendation.
Do memory foam mattresses sleep hot?
Traditional memory foam can retain body heat because its dense structure limits airflow. However, modern memory foam mattresses are specifically engineered to address this. Gel-infused memory foam draws heat away from the body. Open-cell foam structures allow better air circulation. Plant-based foams tend to sleep cooler than petroleum-based alternatives. If you're a warm sleeper, look for memory foam mattresses that specifically mention cooling technology, gel infusion, or breathable covers — these make a meaningful difference to overnight temperature.
How firm is a memory foam mattress?
Memory foam mattresses are available across the full firmness spectrum from soft to firm — the foam can be produced at different densities to create different feels. However, because memory foam contours to the body rather than pushing back against it, even a firmer memory foam mattress will feel softer than a spring mattress of the same rating. Memory foam also softens slightly when warmed by body heat, so it may feel firmer when you first lie down and softer after a few minutes. In colder rooms, memory foam can feel noticeably firmer than it does at room temperature.
How long does a memory foam mattress last?
A good quality memory foam mattress will typically last between 7 and 10 years. Higher-density foams (measured in kg/m³) are more durable and resist body impressions for longer. Lower-density foams are cheaper but tend to soften and develop permanent body impressions more quickly. Signs it's time to replace your memory foam mattress include a visible dip or sag where you sleep, waking up with aches and pains that weren't there before, or a mattress that no longer recovers its shape after you get up.
Do I need to rotate a memory foam mattress?
Most memory foam mattresses are single-sided and should not be flipped, but they should be rotated 180 degrees (head to toe) every 3 months. This distributes wear evenly across the foam and helps prevent body impressions from forming in one spot. Rotating is particularly important in the first year of use when the foam is still settling. Check the manufacturer's care instructions — some memory foam mattresses are specifically marked as no-turn, no-rotate, so always follow the label.
Are memory foam mattresses suitable for all bed frames?
Memory foam mattresses are flexible and work well on most bases. They're well suited to slatted frames (slats up to 7 cm apart work fine), divan bases, and platform beds. Unlike pocket spring mattresses, they can also be used on many adjustable bed frames — their flexibility allows them to bend with the base. This makes them a popular choice for electric adjustable beds. Always check the manufacturer's recommendation before placing on an adjustable base, as not all memory foam mattresses are rated for articulating frames.
Why does a new memory foam mattress smell?
A new memory foam mattress often has a distinct chemical smell when first unboxed — this is known as off-gassing. It's caused by volatile organic compounds (VOCs) released from the foam as it expands. The smell is generally harmless and dissipates within 24–72 hours. To speed up the process, unbox your mattress in a well-ventilated room and allow it to air with the windows open before putting on bedding. Mattresses that have been vacuum-packed for delivery tend to off-gas more noticeably than those delivered flat.
Can two people with very different weights sleep comfortably on a memory foam mattress?
Memory foam's body-responsive properties mean it naturally adjusts to different weights — a heavier person will compress the foam more, a lighter person less, and each gets support proportional to their body. In practice, a significant weight difference between partners can cause the heavier person to create a slope in the mattress that the lighter person rolls toward. If this is a concern, a higher-density or firmer memory foam mattress will be more resistant to this effect, or a hybrid with a pocket spring base will provide a more stable surface overall.
What's the difference between memory foam and regular foam?
Regular foam (also called reflex foam or polyurethane foam) is resilient and bouncy — it compresses under pressure and springs back immediately when that pressure is removed. Memory foam is viscoelastic, meaning it responds slowly to heat and pressure, moulds to the body's shape, and returns to its original form gradually after you move. Regular foam provides more bounce and feels firmer; memory foam provides more contouring and pressure relief but less responsiveness. Many mattresses layer both: reflex foam for the supportive base and memory foam for the comfort layers on top.
